S S S S Spppppaaaaacccceeee Cadets!
Space Cadets Monday 30th January The Cadet news for this week came thick and fast; Aisha met the mayor, Freya bought Nicholas Nickleby for her kindle (she’s read chapter 1 aleady, and she’s only 7!) and Marni’s school is getting a new library. Excellent. Sean then engaged in a few warm up exercises with the children including yoga positions and one in which the children...

Acting With Ammar
Last Monday kicked off the first of three WorkSpace sessions with guest tutor Ammar Haj Ahmad. A Syrian actor who has just moved to London, Ammar was enthusiastic to run the group and we were excited to have him! He began with some ensemble group work, in which we all held hands in a tight circle and then attempted to count to twenty by simply sensing when it was the right time to speak. This...

Bleu, are you a Worm?!
The SYD’s arrived in their usual hyper style, buzzing with gossip and news; Sarahjane and Kirsty went to get new piercings and bought matching skankas whilst they were at it and Kandase has a new necklace. Once the excitement was over (ish), Sean began by talking to the group about character acting. Those actors who play themselves (THE BAD: Hugh Grant, Jennifer Aniston and Russell Brand)...

Monday = Space Cadets Madness
Can you believe a week has gone so quickly?! It was lovely to see the Cadets again this week and we all said a big welcome to new member Jason. We began promptly and after some cat stretches and yoga-like positions (which the Cadets find ‘DISGUSTING!’), Lauren began running this session and she set about teaching the kids a new dance routine to another song from Smike entitled...

Monday Workspace - Spring Term 2012
Congratulations to all those involved in the Trial – what an achievement. Great show, performances the most assured and accomplished I’ve seen - and what box office sales. Adam and I can eat out for a week on what you’ve raked in, hurrah. (I wish). But no rest for the wicked as our Monday night group kick starts again on Monday 23rdJanuary at the usual time of 8-10pm. I am very excited to announce...

Bad Luck Cabaret
Friday the 13th; a date feared and cursed by the superstitious among us. My mother, for one is the first to throw salt over her shoulder and salute to a solitary magpie. However last week, The Space defied this dreaded date by hosting it’s very own Bad Luck Cabaret. The theatre was decorated with open umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and a huge ladder took pride of place centre stage....

Do you Bite your Thumb at us, Sir?
Monday night saw the second SYD session of the year…and what a session it was! After a discussion with the group about comedy and what makes things funny, they set about trying to play up to these definitions. The SYD’s discussed why stereotypes are humorous and how although they can at times seem contrived, this is why they are comic. Sean then gave everyone a stereotypical role to...

Brimstone and Treacle, Good For Young People
We had an excellent turn out this week from Space Cadets members and it was lovely to see the old and new faces getting along swimmingly. Once again, Sean began by asking the group for their news; Nadia has moved up a grade in horse riding, Zoe has about 12 swimming and hockey competitions that she is looking forward to, Aisha has a new baby sister and Junaid got slapped in the face by...

...Along With the Ever Talented SYD's!
Yesterday also brought the return of the SYD group back to The Space. Once again, after what seemed like forever, they entered into the theatre in a flurry of gossiping hubbub and chart hits blasting out of their Blackberry’s. The SYD’s were very happy to see their tutor, Sean after a term without him and once the chatting was over, we got down to some drama. Sean explained to the...

Space Cadets are Back in Business
Yesterday at 4pm, The Space once again became innundated with 7-11 year old children, running around, singing, dancing, playing games and telling stories. After a 4 week break, it was lovely to see the kids once again (with a lot of new faces thrown in for good measure). Sean (who had a term off last season) was back to running the sessions and keeping the Cadets in order. He began by letting...

Steven Shawcroft leads rehearsal warm-up exercises and ice-breakers before putting a reading on its feet in just five hours! Steven has been developing ‘Us’, a short play, over the last four months and worked with a cast of professional actors on Saturday to stand it up in front of an audience. The feedback was good and Steven was great. Applause.
